Eleanor was nine years old the first time the library went dark by itself. She thought it was playing with her.

Raised between the crumbling walls and patient shadows of Hallowfield, she found the ancient tome the way children find things meant for them — tucked behind the wrong book, at exactly her eye level. Inside, every page was blank. But it smelled of her mother's perfume, and something about that made her trust it completely.

That was her first mistake. It was also the last one she would fully understand.

She collects dead moths, pressed flowers, and cracked teacups — arranged on the windowsill like small offerings. She still does, in a place that may not be Hallowfield anymore. Every page she touches turns to memory. Every memory bleeds.

He watches Eleanor the way a guardian watches a flame — with something that looks very much like love, and the quiet knowledge of what fire does. His yellow eyes have seen a thousand stories end. He stays anyway.
